What these alerts mean

A watch means conditions are favourable for severe weather - be ready. A warning means it is happening or imminent in the area drawn, and you should act now. An advisory covers conditions that are inconvenient or hazardous but below warning criteria.

The people-affected figure is estimated from the population of Census places inside each alert. It ranks alerts against each other usefully; it is not a headcount.
