What the National Weather Service says

* WHAT...For the High Rip Current Risk, dangerous rip currents expected. For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 4 to 6 feet expected in the South Carolina surf zone and 5 to 7 feet expected in the Georgia surf zone.

* WHERE...South Carolina Beaches, and Georgia Beaches.

* WHEN...For the High Rip Current Risk, from 8 AM EDT this morning through this evening. For the High Surf Advisory, from noon today to 2 PM EDT Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The combination of strong northeast winds, elevated tides and large breaking waves will increase the risk for significant beach erosion during the high tide cycle late this afternoon/early evening.

What to do

Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
